Kindness, Poverty and Blog Action Day 2008
Filed Under Gratitude, Kindness
Love and kindness are never wasted. They always make a difference. They bless the one who receives them, and they bless you, the giver.
-Barbara De Angelis
Today is Blog Action Day. For Blog Action Day 2008, nearly 10,000 bloggers have committed to writing on the topic of Poverty. And, I am one of them.Kindness In Rough TimesAs many of us scale back our living standards and struggle to balance our increasingly constricted budgets in the face of economic uncertainties, the last thing on our minds is generosity and kindness. Yet, as our retirement savings diminish, holiday bonuses disappear and our jobs and homes become at risk, our lives are still showered with abundance in comparison to many others in the world.Even when our financial future appears frightening (or perhaps especially when it does), the awareness of poverty and generous acts against poverty give rise to inspiration. They remind us of how fortunate we are, and show us just how much we have to give even when we feel as if we have very little.5 Reasons To Take Action Against PovertyKindness is inspiring.Through giving we become aware of the abundance in our own lives. When we make the world a better place, we have a better world in which to live.Through kindness and generosity, we become less preoccupied with our own problems. There is no action we can take that will offer as much meaning to our lives as giving of ourselves.5 Ways To Take Action Against PovertyThe most obvious thing you can do is to donate money to organizations who help the poor. You can also donate cloths, food and other items.Volunteering for organizations is a great way to give of yourself and experience the camaraderie of other kind, generous and inspired people. Doing volunteer work in impoverished areas is a life changing experience.Consider the impact of your day-to-day actions. For instance, buy products from companies with policies that do not exploit the poor.Talk about poverty with others: friends, co-workers, government representatives. Poverty is a topic most of us who are unaffected tend to forget about as we face the challenges of our day-to-day lives. The more we talk about it, the more likely we are to take action.Raise your awareness of poverty. You can start today by visiting the Blog Action Day website and reading what others are writing on this topic. If you enjoyed this post add this site to your favorite reader or subscribe to the daily email.

10 Meditation Tips
Filed Under How To, Meditation, Peace and Contentment
If you want to find God, hang out in the space
between your thoughts.
-Alan Cohen
The aim of effective meditation is to arrest our conscious thoughts and to gain a spiritual perspective of the moment. The real activity of meditation is to block activity. The meditative state comes naturally when obstacles to it are removed. The key is elimination of distractions, and here are 10 tips that have helped me accomplish this:10 Tips For Effective MediationRepeat a short mantra over and over. It could be a single word or a short phrase that brings you peace. This will keep your conscious mind occupied, thus preventing your mind from drifting.Surround yourself with a droning sound such as crickets, ocean waves, wind, rain, drums, etc. and focus only on that sound.Recite a prayer, mantra, poem, etc. that brings you peace. Allow your mind to stop in between words or phrases. Focus on the space between the words or phrases for as long as you can. When you find yourself getting distracted, move on to the next word or phrase.Focus on each or your senses, one at a time, and gradually tune them out.Focus on each part of your body. Relax each muscle group one at a time.Recognize that you are not your body. Imagine your consciousness expanding beyond your body.Try meditating while performing repetitive physical activity such as walking, running, stretching, Yoga, etc. Focus solely on the movements of your body or the environment moving around it.In practicing meditation, remember the meaning of the word practice. As with all spiritual endeavors, we aim to practice and progress, not to perfect. This life is a physical experience and our thoughts and behaviors are influenced by the physical world. Therefore, it is virtually impossible to achieve perfection in any spiritual practice.Do not be concerned about failure. There is no failure. A few years ago, I encountered a problem when meditating. Whenever I would get to a point where I felt as if I was about to achieve nearly perfect peace and clarity, I would get excited and stressed, thus drifting out of my meditative state. I began to anticipate this excitement and would sabotage my meditative state before it happened. Eventually, I learned to accept the excitement and it eventually stopped happening. The fact is, thoughts and feelings, including those that give rise to stress, both positive and negative, will occur. The trick is to acknowledge them and let them go without following them, trying to control them or judging them.Do not be concerned about falling asleep. If you find yourself drifting off to sleep during meditation, it is probably the case that you are successfully quieting your mind and are in need of sleep. Meditation induced sleep is restful and rejuvenating. When the moment feels eternal, time has no relevance and you feel as if you are peering into heaven, you have found success in meditation. For a general guide to mediation see How to Meditate Effectively. If you enjoyed this post add this site to your favorite reader or subscribe to the daily email.

20 More Life Lessons Learned from My Toddler
Filed Under Perspective
One of the advantages of being disorderly is that one is constantly making exciting discoveries.
-A. A. Milne
Here is a sequel to my earlier post, 20 Things I Learned from My Toddler. My son, Tristen, continues to teach me lessons as he bounces through life, always in the moment, always free of regret and resentment, and maintaining priorities that allow him to maximize the joy in every moment in life for himself and everyone around him. Tristen pondering the meaning of life. When the weather is nice, it just doesn’t make sense to stay in the house.Laughter has no prerequisites. When you’re done vomiting, it’s time to run around and celebrate. It’s okay to stay up late once in a while, especially if you’re singing songs with someone you love. When you don’t get what you want, cry for a minute or two, then enjoy what you have.Change is always hard at first, but it always turns out better than you expect.A lifetime of practice using toilets makes it seem much easier than it really is.When a little voice echoes everything you say, you realize just how foul your language really is.Having fun is at least as important as work.It is possible to smile all day long. You really can’t say “I yuv you” too many times. No matter what happens in life, everything looks beautiful if you get enough sleep. While you’re singing a song, everything is fun, even cleaning the house.Cold water is no excuse to get out of the pool.Everything tastes better with ketchup.Stopping for a train at a railroad crossing is not an inconvenience, it’s free entertainment. There is no disagreement or conflict that can’t be solved with a big squeeze and a kiss on the cheek. The world looks so much more interesting and entertaining when you’re hanging upside down.Everything is more fun, joyous and rewarding when shared with someone else. There is nothing more important in life than sharing time with someone you love. For more lessons learned from my toddler and links to other posts relating to learning from children, see 20 Things I Learned from My Toddler. If you enjoyed this post add this site to your favorite reader or subscribe to the daily email.

Why Practice Faith?
Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe.
-Saint Augustine
Most of our day to day decisions have clear knowledge and facts we can use to weigh our options. But some of the most important questions we face in life have to be answered with no measurable facts:What is the meaning of life?Is there a God?Does God love me?What does God want me to do?What happens when we die?Though there are endless philosophies and belief systems that attempt to answer these questions, none can be proven without doubt. In my previous post, Does God Really Exist?, I touched on the idea that God’s existence can not be proven in an intellectual and scientific way. I talked about building faith and ended questioning the value of committing oneself to building faith in something we know we can not prove. What Is the Benefit of Faith? If you’ve ever interviewed for a job, you have experienced the benefit of faith. When we interview, we make a tremendous effort to achieve a goal we may or may not achieve. It is nearly impossible to put forth such an effort without faith that we will achieve that goal. It’s generally the case that the more faith, or confidence, we have in our ability to land the job, the better we perform in the interview process and the more likely we are to succeed. This is how faith works in all areas of our lives. The more faith we have in God and our life’s purpose, the more direction and purpose we will find in our lives. On the other hand, when we lack faith, direction, purpose and motivation are difficult to find and life grows stagnant. The risk of placing faith in something of which we are not certain seems much less than the risk of a life devoid of faith. We can ask ourselves these questions:Am I better off believing that God exists if, in fact, he does not, or am I better off believing God does not exists if, in fact, he does?Am I better off believing that life has no purpose if, in fact, it does, or am I better off believing life has purpose if, in fact, it does not?If you enjoyed this post add this site to your favorite reader or subscribe to the daily email.

Making Painful Decisions
And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.
-Anais Nin
Sometimes change can be so difficult that we find ourselves doubled over in pain. Tears flow uncontrollably, and the pain is so intense that we just want to wake up from the nightmare we are experiencing and find that life is the same as it was before things changed. These moments are especially challenging when the grief we are experiencing is a result of our own decision to make a major change in our lives. Sometimes we can wake up from the nightmare if we simply compromise our decision or settle into a life that gives us little or no joy. But, a painless life is a joyless life. As I wrote previously in It’s a Wonderful, Hard Life, “To live a full life, avoiding pain and grief is as self-defeating as avoiding joy.” An inspirational life of change and growth comes with a package of pain and joy. Green Bay shore north of Sister Bay in Door County, Wisconsin. It is natural to want to avoid experiencing moments doubled over in pain. It is less natural to want to change things we are accustomed to and comfortable with even when those things drain joy from our lives. So, it makes sense that so many of us go through life settling for less that what we truly desire. This is what keeps people in unrewarding careers, in abusive relationships, etc. The pain of change usually appears much greater than the subtle, sometimes life-draining, forces of comfortable pain. How to Face Painful ChangeHere are a few tips to remaining strong while facing painful change.Allow yourself to cry. Fighting off tears can be stressful and can distort our view of the world. Tears have a cleansing power. They help us see things more clearly. Crying moves us through the grief process and lessens the pain in the end.Spend time with supportive people. Spending time with someone who supports our decision, whether they agree with it or not, helps keep us strong. Sharing grief and tears with someone we trust makes the pain much more bearable.Pray and meditate. Through prayer and meditation we are sharing our grief with God and gaining clarity and direction which, in turn, helps us know we are making the right decision.Trust your decision. No one knows the life you want for yourself better than you do. No one can discover God’s will for you but you. Friends and loved ones can offer ideas and opinions which may help and guide you, but in the end, your opinion is what matters most.To read more about how I dealt with the pain and joy of change by letting go of drug addiction and embracing a clean and spiritual life, see my post, Letting Go and Embracing Change. If you enjoyed this post add this site to your favorite reader or subscribe to the daily email.

Does God Really Exist?
Faith is the art of holding on to things your reason has once accepted in spite of your changing moods.
-C.S. Lewis
The question of whether or not God exists may have significance beyond any other. It affects the roots of our priority system. It molds our perception of the meaning of life. And, it changes the way we feel about the experience of death. But, no scientific method, whether philosophical or physical, has yet proven the existence of God. Conversely, no scientific method has yet proven the lack of God’s existence. It’s not likely that it will ever be the case that any one of us in this life will have solid, intellectual knowledge one way or the other. How Do I Know God Exists? As a skeptic and one who favors intellectual proof, the lack of solid evidence of God’s existence presents a challenge for me. The fact is, in the intellectual sense, I don’t know that God exists. Knowledge of God’s presence in my life is merely supported by personal experiences, feelings and evidence in the form of events I might otherwise think of as coincidences or luck.I see the effects of prayer and meditation in the world around me. I feel God’s presence when I meditate or when I practice kindness toward another person. These things build faith in me without building solid intellectual knowledge. In each case, my faith builds as a result of my actions. How can we live with intention and inspiration without concrete knowledge of God’s existence?Knowledge or belief of God’s presence wavers for most of us. Such is the nature of faith. Even the most spiritual people on Earth experience doubt.Faith is not based on knowledge, so it is not something we can just learn about and have. It is something we exercise and practice. It is an investment in our spiritual well-being and requires some commitment. The challenge, then, is making an investment in something in which we have little faith in order to build faith.Believe to KnowIn order to know that God exists, we must first believe. Those who believe see the world differently than those who do not. They see evidence where others see nothing.Because of this apparent catch 22, building faith takes time. For most of us, it doesn’t start with great leaps of faith. It starts slowly with small commitments and little hops of faith. As our faith grows, we begin to make larger commitments and leaps. Why Practice Faith? If building faith seems like a lot of work and you’re not sure it makes sense to work so hard to put faith in something you can not prove, you may want to read my upcoming post: Why Practice Faith? If you enjoyed this post add this site to your favorite reader or subscribe to the daily email.
