Finland is mentioned for the first time on a printed map of Europe in the work Liber Chronicarum published in 1493 by Hartman Schedel. On a map of Scandinavia published half a century later a hundred place names in Finland were already known. The Grand Duchy of Finland as a part of the Swedish realm became known to the Europeans in the middle of the 17th century and scientifically accurate maps became known at the end of the 18th century. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs commissioned the Museum of Central Finland in Jyväskylä to assemble the exhibition "Finland 500 years on the Map of Europe" in 1993. The electric version of this exhibition is now available on this Internet page. The exhition displays through the information provided by the evolution of maps how Finland developed from a sparsely inhabited and remote Swedish province into a developed European state during a period lasting half a millenium. The material has mainly been photographed from maps belonging to the private Fredrikson collection. The collection is one of the largest of its kind in Finland and the collecting has continued for over sixty years. You do realize that these pictures are to be handled according to the same copywright laws as any printed matter and that any unauthorized usage is prohibited.
