Comments (0)PermalinkTip Jar TextbooksThursday October 9, 2008Any online student knows that textbook prices can be outrageous. It's not uncommon to spend hundreds of dollars in a single semester. Now, one professor is giving an electronic version of his textbook out free, asking that students pay what they think the text is worth after they've had a chance to read it.
Wired Campus reports:
"Imagine using a textbook free all semester—and then ponying up what, if anything, you thought it was worth. Noel Capon, a professor of marketing at Columbia Business School, has decided to try out that model with his latest textbook, Managing Marketing in the 21st Century...
The book’s Web site compares the scheme to the band Radiohead’s release of its album In Rainbows, which listeners could download free."
Will it work? Or will students use the textbook without compensating the professor for his effort? Only time will tell.See Also:

Comments (0)PermalinkBeware of Fake Online High SchoolsTuesday October 7, 2008This month I've received several emails from readers concerned about choosing an online high school. Be aware: there are scams out there. Some so-called schools make big promises, offering to award a diploma for little effort and a lot of money.
So, how do you choose a legitimate program? Check the school's accreditation. Programs with regional accreditation are the most accepted by colleges and employers. Programs with DETC accreditation (also known as national accreditation) are also accepted by many.
You may also want to ask each potential school questions about their class offerings, teacher qualifications, and extracurricular offerings.
