Our 500 members who live in 42 countries around the worldincludepeople working on dictionaries, academics who engage in research andwritingabout dictionaries, dictionary collectors, librarians, booksellers,translators,linguists, publishers, writers, collectors, journalists, and peoplewithan avocational interest in dictionaries.The only requirement for membership is an expression of interest inlanguage, in words, dictionaries and lexicography, or any combinationofthese.Members receive a semi-annual newsletter that gives informationaboutthe Society and its members, dictionaries or lexicographic research inprogress or recently published, lexicography courses and workshops, andrecent or forthcoming conferences of lexicographic interest. Oncea year they also receive the journal Dictionaries, containingforumson issues in lexicography; articles or notes and queries on the making,critique, use, collection, and history of dictionaries, includingsketchesof lexicographers; descriptions of significant dictionary collections;reviews of dictionaries and books on lexicography or closely relatedtopics;and bibliographies on various aspects of lexicography. Amembershipdirectory is published every few years. Other occasionalpublicationsare issued. Members areentitled to free classified advertising in the newsletter once ayear. Memberships are for the calendar year, January through December.Current annual dues (calendar year 2008) for regular members orinstitutionsin the United States, Canada, and Mexico are $40, non-NorthAmerica$50;for students and retired members in North America $30, others$40. As stated in its handbook, "The purpose of the Society is tofoster scholarly andprofessionalactivities relating to dictionaries" (defined as lists of words orothervocabulary items, with information about their meaning or otherlinguisticproperties).
