Fezzan
Arabic:
fazzān
Saharan region in Libya, without clear boundaries, but normally regarded as the central region of Libya, covering altogether 700,000 km².
The Fezzan region touches the Libyan coastal zone in the north, the Libyan desert in the east, the Tibesti massif of Chad to the south, and the Hoggar massif along with the Grand Erg Oriental of Algeria to the west.
Fezzan is known for some of the most beautiful scenery of Sahara, as well as numerous collections of cave paintings scatterd around in the mountains. The population of Fezzan has been rapidly increasing in the last decades, mainly due to foreign immigration, and today more than 350,000 people live here, of which probably 50% are non-Libyan citizens. But still, the only city of the region is Sebha.
Fezzan is no longer self-sustainable, and most people work for the government or in government-protected jobs. Agriculture is still of importance, especially the near 5 million date trees, from which almost 90,000 tons of dates are produced annually. Other produce includes olives, grapes, figs and oranges. Modern farms have been set up all around the region, but the profits from them are still limited.
History
8th millennium BCE: Settlements of Fezzan are believed to have been forming early culture societies.
5th century BCE: Reports written by the Greek historian Herodotus of sedentary farming, and use of horse-drawn chariots used in wars.
Rise of the Garamantian Empire.
7th century CE: Decline of the Garamantian Empire.
1943: Fezzan comes under French control.
1950: Fezzan joins with Tripolitania and Cyrenaica, to form a constitution and designate a ruler for the forthcoming kingdom of Libya.
1951: Fezzan becomes part of the new kingdom of Libya.
