ETH Telefonbuch Das Departement Biologie ist eines von 16 Departementen der ETH Zürich. Es besteht aus 6 Instituten und 12 selbständigen Professuren; diese Einheiten sind in verschiedenen Bereichen der Grundlagen- und angewandten Forschung beteiligt. Grundlagen-Forschungsbereiche sind Themen der Biochemie, der Biophysik, der molekularen und zellulären Biologie, der Mikrobiologie und der Pflanzenwissenschaften gewidmet. Angewandt wird in den Gebieten der Biotechnologie und der Sportphysiologie geforscht. Viele verschiedene experimentelle Systeme werden benutzt, um grundlegende Fragen der Biologie zu klären. Die Untersuchung des Zusammenhangs zwischen Struktur und Funktion auf allen Niveaux der biologischen Komplexität stellen das zentrale Thema dar. Dieses umfaßt z.B. Abhängigkeiten von Biomolekülen und deren Liganden, von Biomolekülen und Zellstrukturen, Erkennungsprozesse zwischen Zellen und Gewebe und die Funktion des gesamten Organismus. Das Departement Biologie bietet einen jeweils drei Jahre dauernden BSc-Studiengang in Biologie, sowie einen in Bewegungswissenschaften und Sport an. Daran anschliessend folgt die eineinhalbjährige Master-Stufe mit neun Vertiefungsrichtungen: Ökologie und Evolution, Neurowissenschaften, Mikrobiologie und Immunologie, Zellbiologie, Pflanzenbiologie, Systembiologie, Biochemie, Strukturbiologie und Biophysik, Biologische Chemie. Auf der Master-Stufe in Bewegungswissenschaften und Sport werden Vertiefungen auf den Gebieten Bewegungs- und Trainingslehre, Biomechanik und Sportphysiologie angeboten. Im Departement Biologie sind gegenwärtig etwa 550 Studierende eingeschrieben. Ausserdem beschäftigt das Departement ca. 340 Doktorierende in den diversen Forschungsinstitutionen.
