Abstract

The W3C Recommendation XML Schema Part 2: Datatypes [XSD] (hereafter called "XSD") provides a specification of datatypes and their facets, and forms the semantic basis of this document, which establishes Published Subject Indicators (PSIs) for each XML Schema datatype and facet. A PSI is a (relatively) stable URL used as a canonical identifier for a subject, particularly within an XML Topic Map [XTM] document, though application of PSIs is not limited to XTM. This document does not alter any XML Schema datatype definition; for definitions of each datatype, please refer to [XSD].

Status of this Document

Note: Both this specification and its accompanying topic map are a first draft; no stability is suggested, and comments are most welcome. This document, which consists of a specification and an accompanying topic map, are intended for review and comment by interested parties. It is a “work in progress,” currently has no formal status, and its publication should not be construed as endorsement by any corporate or academic body. This document may be updated, replaced, rendered obsolete by other documents, or removed from circulation at any time. It is inappropriate to use this document as reference material, or cite it as anything other than a “work in progress.” Distribution of this document is unlimited.

back to TOCIntroduction

While XML Schema Datatypes itself provides URL identifiers for eachdatatype and facet, and while that set of URLs in itself could actas the PSIs for XTM datatypes, some applications may require thattheir fundamental topics be grounded in a topic map document. Some reasons for the existence of this document:Need for a data typing facility in topic map documents. Eg., the ability to express a date, a boolean, or a floating point number.Because datatype PSIs are likely to be used in combination with other topics (such as part of a scope constraining interpretation of a topic characteristic), both for convenience and taking advantage of other topic map features, these PSIs are provided here by an explicit XML Topic Map (XTM) document, datatypes.xtm.The topic map included with this specification provides topics and associations representing the datatyping taxonomy (see the figure in Section 3 of [XSD]) as well as the relations between a datatype and its facets. Because as of this writing over nineteen months have passed since publication of the XML Schema Recommendation, and the proposed XSD URLs (whose base URL is "http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema") are still only a placeholder document, this document may be considered stable regardless of what occurs on the W3C web site in the future.Since XSD itself describes the structure of such URLs, the topic map datatypes.xtm merely reifies each of these URLs as XTM topics. The XSD-based URL and the PSI are considered equivalent as subject identifiers, and the topic map establishes suchan identity.Note that this document links each PSI to an ID in the datatypes.xtm topic map document, which includes a subject identifier of an ID in this document. Even though a compliant topic map engine would consider these resources as having equivalent subjects, the IDs used in this document are not meant to be used in lieu of those created by the topic map, as listed below following "PSI:".ExampleBelow is an example of the "decimal" PSI, followed by the decimal "minInclusive" facet. PSI: http://kmi.open.ac.uk/psi/datatypes.xtm#decimal   sID: http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#decimal The "decimal" datatype may be identified by the PSI "http://kmi.open.ac.uk/psi/datatypes.xtm#decimal", or when the "datatypes.xtm"topic map is merged within a larger system of maps, by the URL reference to the XMLSchema Datatypes Recommendation ("sID" being an abbreviation here for "subject identifier") "http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#decimal". PSI: http://kmi.open.ac.uk/psi/datatypes.xtm#decimal.minInclusive   sID: http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#decimal.minInclusive The "minInclusive" facet of the "decimal" datatype may be identified by the PSI "http://kmi.open.ac.uk/psi/datatypes.xtm#decimal.minInclusive", or when the "datatypes.xtm" topic map is merged within a larger system of maps, by the URL"http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#decimal.minInclusive" (minInclusiveand maxInclusive can be used together to set the limits of a decimal value).

back to TOCSuggested Usage

No attempt is made here to limit the possible uses (syntactically and/orsemantically) of a datatype PSI, so this section prototypes what might beconsidered some possible "best practices." As such, the author welcomes comments and suggestions for both improvements or new applications.Furthermore, because the XML Schema Datatypes Recommendation establishesa facility for designing complex datatypes but does not explicitly create them, datatypes for common units of measure such as kilograms, kilometers, meters/second, etc. are not available. It is not expectedthat XTM documents be developed to provide complex constraint mechanisms, nor that tools would be developed to interpret XTM-based constraints of that complexity. But given the availability of the PSIs for expressingthese constraints, topic map processors in combination with otherschema processing software may fill this void.Because the topic map concept of scope is used as a constrainton the interpretation of a topic characteristic (eg., altering the scope of the topic base name "smoking" from English to French, where "smoking"means "tuxedo" in French), and because datatypes typically are used to identify the unit of form of measurement or metric, adding a datatype PSI as member of the set of topics expressing the scope states the datatype of that characteristic.Example 1: DatesFollowing is an example showing use of the "date" PSI to establish a date: <topic id="nineeleven"> <baseName> <scope> <topicRef xlink:href="http://kmi.open.ac.uk/psi/datatypes.xtm#date" /> </scope> <baseNameString>2001-09-11</baseNameString> </baseName> </topic>Note the choice of <topicRef> as the link to the datatype: a <subjectIndicatorRef> could also be used here, but giventhat the link points to a <topic> element in the "datatypes.xtm"topic map document, we can be more explicit (in XTM syntax, a <topicRef>element must point to a topic element, whereas <subjectIndicatorRef> can point to any addressable resource that identifies the subject). Alternately, one can point directly to the URL for "date" described in XSD using a <subjectIndicatorRef>, as subject identity with the PSI isprovided by the "datatypes.xtm" topic map, if that topic map is merged intoyour topic map to provide that subject linking. It should be noted that XSD provides a variety of date-related datatypes;"date" is only one.Example 2: Floating Point ValuesFollowing is an example showing use of the "float" PSI to establish that a value is a floating point number. This could be combined with a topic further identifying the datatype as perhaps a weight or distance (in thisexample, as a value in kilograms, this requiring a topic for such a use be available; the example below points to a nonexistent "measures.xtm" topic map): <topic id="weight"> <baseName> <scope> <topicRef xlink:href="http://kmi.open.ac.uk/psi/datatypes.xtm#float" /> <topicRef xlink:href="http://kmi.open.ac.uk/psi/measures.xtm#kg" /> </scope> <baseNameString>64.275</baseNameString> </baseName> </topic>Because the topics included within a scope are considered as an additiveset, the combination of "float" with "kg" establishes "64.275" as a floatingpoint value in kilograms. The United Nations has produced a number of codesets for trade that includes units of measurement, which could be so "converted"for topic map use (see [UNeDocs]).Example 3: Natural LanguageBecause the XTM 1.0 Specification includes PSIs for both language andcountry, it is not strictly necessary to further identify a topiccharacteristic by including an XSD-based PSI, but in applications that are aware of the gamut of XSD datatypes (say, an augmented topicmap processor), the addition of a language identifier may be consideredvaluable. Also, there may be further constraints on language offeredby XSD complex datatypes that are not provided by the XTM languagestopics. This is considered out of scope for this specification. <topic id="weight"> <baseName> <scope> <topicRef xlink:href="http://topicmaps.org/xtm/1.0/language.xtm#fr" /> <topicRef xlink:href="http://kmi.open.ac.uk/psi/datatypes.xtm#language" /> </scope> <baseNameString>smoking</baseNameString> </baseName> </topic>
