English-Vietnamese Technical Terms Translation Projectby VACETSEnglish-Vietnamese Technical Terms Translation Projectby VACETS Vietnamese Association for Computing, Engineering Technology, and ScienceVACETS Dictionary ProjectWhat is it all about? - FAQVACETS-DICT: QUESTIONS YOU MAY LIKE TO ASK(27/03/95)Table of contentsWHAT IS VACETS-DICT?HOW TO SUBSCRIBE/UNSUBSCRIBE THIS LIST?WHO WILL BENEFIT?WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME?WHAT IS THE MAIN METHODOLOGY?IS IT A ONE-TO-ONE TRANSLATION?WHAT ARE THE MAIN CRITERIA FOR TRANSLATION?WHAT IS INVOLVED?WHO ARE THE KEY PARTICIPANTS (KP)?WHAT DOES THE DATABASE LOOK LIKE?FURTHER QUESTIONS?WHAT IS VACETS-DICT?This is an open forum to discuss about technical terminology used in Vietnamese documents. The aim is to produce an English-Vietnamese database of technical terms. Initially, the project is confined in the field of Computer Science, with some extension into the fields of Electrical, Electronic Engineering, and Telecommunication.Although from time to time, we may need to discuss about the meaning and definition of a technical term for precise translation, the end product is to establish the Vietnamese equivalent(s) of an English term. The database will not include the explanatory part of the term. This project is initiated and managed by Vacets (Vietnamese Association for Computing, Engineering Technology, and Science). However, the forum is open for all netters, both Vacets members and other non-members. We welcome all cooperations and contributions from other professional groups and organisations.Initially, the project coordinator is: Dr. Binh Anson (Bi`nh) Email: anson@csuvax1.murdoch.edu.auHOW TO SUBSCRIBE/UNSUBSCRIBE THIS LIST?Send a message to: majordomo@saigon.comIn the subject line: leave blankIn the message body: Subscribe Vacets-DictIn case you wish to leave the list later on, repeat Steps 1.1 and 1.2, then enter the following in the message body: Unsubscribe Vacets-DictIf you have any problem of subscribing/unsubscribing, send a message to the project coordinator.WHO WILL BENEFIT?Everybody, specially those who have the need to write or use Vietnamese technical documents. Upon completion, the database in digital format will be released into the public domain, and sent to major computer archiving sites for anonymous ftp retrieval by the public. However, if a substantial part of the database is used for any purpose, proper acknowledgments to the authors must be clearly stated. The authors of the database at this point in time are: *** DO THONG MINH, Tokyo, Japan, and VACETS, Washington, USA. ***The joint authorship name(s) may be expanded if we receive significant contributions from other individuals or organisations.Names of all Key Participants, participants and contributing organisations will be listed and acknowledged in the database.WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME?Fun, knowledge, friendship and personal satisfaction. Being part of the project will help you to understand better various aspects of English and Vietnamese languages. It will enrich your own vocabulary and word skill. It will also helps you to know more about the Latin, Ha'n, No^m roots of the two languages. If everyone follows the common sense of "netiquette", the forum will be an enjoyable and harmonious place to have new friends.Last but not least, it is an opportunity to share your knowledge, to be part of the continuing process to build a treasure of technical terms for all Vietnamese, present and future generations, to use.WHAT IS THE MAIN METHODOLOGY?5.1Initially, the project is confined in the field of Computer Science, with some extension into the fields of Electrical, Electronic Engineering, and Telecommunication. However, when necessary, participants are welcome to raise questions and queries on technical terms in other fields of science and engineering. These terms will be included in a supplementary database for further development at a later stage. In addition, any definition and explanation of a technical term in Vietnamese - generated by participants during the course of project - will also be stored in a separate appendix to the database.5.2The project will make use of the database supplied by Mr Do Thong Minh (DDo^~ Tho^ng Minh), Tokyo, Japan. Anh Minh is the author of the English-Vietnamese General Informatics Dictionary (Tu+` DDie^?n Tin Ho.c To^?ng Ho+.p Anh Vie^.t, Ta^n Va(n Publisher, California, 1994). He has kindly given his permission to the project for using his extensive database. Although the original database contains over 30,000 entries, it is expected that only about 10,000 entries of more common terms will be discussed.5.3The above database is used only as a base to start with. It does not mean that project will totally concur with the translation by Anh DT Minh. Participants are welcome to discuss, modify or change the translated terms during the course of the project. Other additional terms suggested by them will also be discussed and included in the database, if appropriate.IS IT A ONE-TO-ONE TRANSLATION?Not necessarily. More than one Vietnamese term for each English entry may be included. Although the main aim is to find the best translation term, any reasonable alternatives will be accepted. If there are significant different about the terms used by domestic and overseas communities, [TN] and [NN] will be added to the domestic and overseas terms, respectively. Sometimes, a term already translated and used by other countries sharing the same Ha'n root, such as China [TQ], Taiwan [DL], Japan [NB], is also included for comparison.WHAT ARE THE MAIN CRITERIA FOR TRANSLATION?CORRECT, CONCISE, and COMMONLY-USED by the Vietnamese people. The following approaches should be considered: - Use of No^m words - Use of mixed Ha'n-No^m - Use of Ha'n roots - Use of transliterationAs mentioned above, more than one reasonable translation alternatives for an English term may be recorded in the database. In case of a serious dispute between participants about certain translation terms, the project coordinator is responsible to decide which terms to be included in the database. However, as the database will be released into public domain, the participants may add or modify the translation, as they wish, on their personal copy. It is not the intention of the project to impose the use of a particular translation term. The final choice of appropriate words will rest with the users. Time and public acceptance of a technical term are the ultimate tests of its validity.WHAT IS INVOLVED?Each week, a set of about 300 to 500 terms will be posted to the list for discussion. The project coordinator will compile all relevant discussions and resolutions monthly, and send back to the list, Vacets-Heads, and Anh DT Minh.It is anticipated that the first version of the database will be completed in 6 months. Depending on the demands and available resources at that time, the next phase will be conducted, on revising the database and developing utility programs for accessing it.WHO ARE THE KEY PARTICIPANTS (KP)?Although the project is open to all netters, we urge you to consider to register as active project members, the Key Participants (KPs). A KP should be prepared to spend a little more time to review and comment the weekly word list, detecting possible errors, and evaluate the appropriateness of each entry. It is also expected that the KP should have easy access to a number of reference dictionaries, either from public libraries or by purchasing them. Following is a suggested list: English technical dictionaries in relevant specialised fields Do Thong Minh's Tu+` DDie^?n Tin Ho.c To^?ng Ho+.p (USA, 1994), or Phung Quang Nhuong 's Tu+` DDie^?n Thua^.t Ngu+~ Tin Ho.c Anh- Viet (Hanoi, 1994) Standard English Dictionaries (Oxford, Webster, ...)
